A Library in Africa, In Honor of My Grandmother

There are moments in life that feel almost too magical to put into words.
This is one of them.
On May 16, 2025, a new library officially opened at Thunga Primary School in Thyolo, Malawi, a public school that serves 1,706 children, many of whom are orphans. This vibrant new space is now filled with 2,500 books, tables, benches, and colorful murals, offering a place for children to read, learn, and feel inspired.
Painted on the wall are words I often say to my clients:
"You are beautiful the way you are. Be you. Be yourself."
For Mémé, With Love
This library was made possible through a donation I made in loving memory of my grandmother, Stanislawa Sulkowski.
From an early age, I was inspired by her strength and grace. A Polish woman who endured unimaginable loss—she lost three of her sons—yet carried herself with unwavering kindness and positivity. Though she lived her entire life in a small village in France and never boarded a plane, her love for books and deep reverence for education shaped me. Despite having little, she gave everything. She would often remind me:
“Enjoy every moment, because every second is precious, and you never know when it’s the end.”
This spirit of gratitude, resilience, and generosity continues to guide me in my life, in my work, and now, in this offering to the world.

A Life-Changing Experience
The opportunity to support the school came through my partner, who volunteered in Malawi 15 years ago. A photo of that school has remained the background on his phone ever since. I was always curious.
Two years ago, we traveled there together to volunteer. During that week, I had the privilege of teaching yoga, meditation, and entrepreneurship to the students.
What I experienced changed me forever.
Many of the children are orphans, yet they radiate joy, love, and a level of hope that moved me beyond words. When I left, they wrote me letters—heartfelt notes I will keep close for the rest of my life.
A Legacy of Love & Literacy
When I later learned that the Jacaranda Foundation was building a new library through their Luc’s Libraries initiative, I knew I wanted to contribute.
This library felt like the perfect way to honor my grandmother’s legacy and give these extraordinary children a space where they can grow, dream, and feel seen.
Every child deserves to know that their worth isn’t defined by their circumstance, but by the light within them.
To all who made this possible—thank you.
To the children of Thunga Primary School: you inspire me more than you will ever know. I believe in you. I see your light. And this is only the beginning.
With love and gratitude,
Delphine
