Why Are We Losing Eyebrow Hair After 40?

Eyebrows are essential. They frame your face, allow you to express emotions, and have the power to completely change your look. However, as women and men reach their 40s, it's common to start experiencing eyebrow hair loss. It might be gradual, but one day you might suddenly realize you don’t look quite like you used to.

Unfortunately, thinning eyebrows as you age is very common and can happen for many different reasons.

Understanding Eyebrow Hair Loss

The average eyebrow has around 250 hairs and it’s normal to lose about 2-3 hairs per day. Eyebrow hair loss can result from various causes, including:

  • Hormonal changes like thyroid imbalances.

  • Skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and dermatitis.

  • Autoimmune diseases like alopecia.

  • Lack of essential nutrients such as vitamins A, E, and zinc.

  • Chemotherapy, radiotherapy, laser treatments, and other medical treatments

  • Medications including Botox, retinoids, and more.

  • Mental health conditions like trichotillomania.

  • Over-plucking or over-waxing.

  • Stress and anxiety.

  • Bacterial, fungal, or viral infections.

  • Physical trauma including injuries and accidents.

Additionally, as we age, it’s perfectly normal to naturally lose eyebrow hairs.

Growing up, I had very sparse eyebrows and it really affected how I looked. This is how I started my journey into learning about eyebrow microblading. And now, in my 40's, I have noticed eyebrow hair loss myself as well.

I've also seen my sisters and mother go through hair loss due to cancer treatments and how that affected how they saw themselves in the mirror. When your appearance changes, it also changes how you feel.

Can You Prevent Thinning Eyebrows?

If the cause of your thinning brows are due to medical reasons, it’s important to understand the root cause and talk with your doctor, but taking care of your overall health can help maintain your eyebrow hairs. Here are some tips:

  • Eat a balanced diet rich in iron and foods high in good fats (omega 3-6-9).

  • Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

  • Get a good amount of sleep every night.

  • Maintain a wellness routine that promotes relaxation and reduces stress.

  • Be active and exercise.
